Of all the social networks, perhaps Pinterest is the one that’s most interested in how pretty your images are.
And it’s definitely worth ramping up the pretty – because Pinterest is the fastest growing source of traffic for blogs in our community. Get your Pinterest images right and you can attract thousands of new readers.
Here are some of our top tips for creating killer images on Pinterest:
- Do your Research
Pinterest offers access to analytics showing you which pins perform best on your account. You can now look for pins that rank higher in search and pins that are most re-pinned. This is a good way of seeing what your existing followers might want to see more of.
- Get the Size Right
The best format for Pinterest photos is ‘portrait’ (taller than wide), which is generally the opposite shape to the images you’ll use in blog posts. But it matters – so do take 5 minutes to make a portrait version of your photos, or consider making a portrait-shaped collage using several landscape images. Apparently, the best size for images on Pinterest is 750px wide – you can easily resize images using free sites such as Picmonkey.
- Add some text
Adding words to your image is a quick and easy way to increase the effectiveness of the image on Pinterest. Text can be used over your image (again, try Picmonkey to achieve this effect easily) to summarise the post and provide people with a compelling reason to click though. It’s also true that Pinterest users LOVE a good inspirational quote – if you’ve got a really striking destination photo, consider putting a quote over it, and adding it to your boards – every re-pin introduces new people to your brand and blog!
- Think about Colour
The most popular images on Pinterest have plenty of colour – reds and oranges do better overall than images which are mostly blue. And objects do better than people, apparently.
I hope some of these tips were useful to you – happy pinning!
