Our season continues with a visit to The Gambia. The Gambia is known as the smiling coast of West Africa with good reason, the people are among the friendliest you could hope to meet anywhere. With glorious weather, miles of uncrowded sandy beaches and a colourful culture, it’s the perfect winter sun getaway. But what makes this little country so unique and memorable? Here are 5 suggestions of things to make your stay unforgettable from Kathryn Burrington who blogs at Travel with Kat

Explore Makasutu Forest

This sacred forest is a must for anyone with a love of wildlife. Take a nature walk with a local guide and you’ll most likely come across a 200 strong troupe of baboons. Climb the tower for a view above the tree tops out across the mangrove swamps, then explore them by canoe as your guide points out some of the 560 species of birds found in The Gambia.

Cook Western African Cuisine

What better way to get to know a country than through its food? Learn how to make a spicy fish benachin or chicken yassa, then enjoy a tasty meal that you have helped prepare. A wonderful insight into Gambian life.

Visit Kunta Kinte Island

Made famous by Alex Haley’s novel Roots, Kunta Kinte, was captured in The Gambia and sent to a life of slavery in America. Visit the island and fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where he was held captive before bring forced from his homeland; a poignant day trip that is well worth making.

Feed vultures

Now this may seem a strange option but when hundreds of vultures gather in the tree tops and then swoop down at feeding time in the grounds of the Senegambia Hotel in Kololi it really is quite a sight to behold and a fascinating experience.

Have a 5 star massage

However, if the ultimate in relaxation is what you are seeking a visit to The Spa at Coco Ocean, one of the most luxurious hotels in West Africa, is a must. Treatments here cost a fraction of the price that you would pay at a top hotel in the UK. What better way to pamper yourself on holiday?
