100 Destinations: Thessaloniki

In the latest in our 100 destinations series, Emily Luxton who blogs at Emily Luxton Travels brings you some of the best things to do in Thessaloniki. A major university hub with a seriously youthful community, the Greek port city of Thessaloniki is known for its incredible nightlife and creative, bohemian atmosphere. There’s also a rich history, with Ancient Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman architecture dotted throughout the city, plus a seriously fantastic food scene that’s been heavily influenced by the strong ties with Turkey….

Scale the White Tower

Built by the Ottomans during their occupation of the city, the White Tower (which is actually brown) is the perfect place to start. Get your bearings, not only literally with the fabulous views from the top of this seafront tower, but also in terms of the city’s history at the museum.

Cruise the Harbour

Popular with locals and visitors alike are the three motor boats, designed to look like ancient Greek triremes, which offer a free harbour cruise – provided you buy at least one drink. Boats depart all day from next to the White Tower, becoming party cruises playing modern Greek music at night.

Hit the Markets

Get a slice of everyday Greek life at the markets: centuries-old Kapani, decaying Modiano, or colourful Louloudadika Flower Market next to the beautiful Yahudi Hammam. For shopaholics, quirky Athonos Market is perfect for finding vintage clothes and handmade jewellery.

Soak up Sunset from Alysseos Tower

Better known as Trigonion Tower, this spot at the north-eastern corner of the ancient city walls provides gorgeous views across Thessaloniki. Try to visit at sunset, when the whole city turns gold and pink – beautiful!

Party Like the Locals

Fun-loving Thessaloniki is ranked among the best cities in the world for nightlife and throws an incredible city-wide party every weekend, with music scenes to suit all tastes. Locals recommend the districts of Ladadika, Valaoritou, and Bit Bazaar.
