If you enjoy exploring the cultural side of a place, there are some great blogs which can inspire you. Whether you want to connect with locals, learn a language, find hidden places or tour the main sites, these six culture-vulture travel blogs are a great place to start your journey says Gretta Schifano, who blogs at mumsdotravel.com.

Inside the Travel Lab

Abigail King swapped a career as a hospital doctor for life as a travel writer. Her luxury travel blog Inside the Travel Lab covers both history and adventure in a thoughtful and engaging way, with fascinating features such as The cork tree and why it matters in Portugal. Inside The Travel Lab has received many awards and accolades, and is rated as one of the best travel blogs in the world by National Geographic Traveler.

Emily Luxton Travels

Emily Luxton says that her travel style is ‘Deep Travel’, and the focus of her blog Emily Luxton Travels is on connecting with places as deeply and as honestly as she can. Emily writes about the culture, food, art and people of places which she visits, with posts such as A Strange Auld Toon, about a walking tour of Edinburgh with a local storyteller.

Cabbie Blog

Cabbie Blog is written by a London licensed black cab driver who uses the pseudonym Gibson Square. Besides posts about what it’s like to be a London cabbie, and a list of celebrities who have been in his cab, there are also interesting articles about London. Site Unseen is a monthly feature which highlights an unusual building in London, such as a modernist car park, a penguin pool and a Hanoverian gatehouse.

Travels in Translation is written by Beth Williams, and its tagline is Travel translated through culture. Beth lives between Japan and Hong Kong, and is passionate about language, culture and photography. Travels in Translation has a particular focus on Asian culture, with articles such as Amazing Things Carried by Motorbike in Vietnam, and 10 Words You Must Know When Travelling to Japan.

A Brit & A Southerner
The idea behind the blog A Brit & A Southerner is to inspire people to explore the world, one weekend at at time. Bloggers Chris and Heather Boothman publish helpful posts about their weekend travels in Europe, North America and Australia, such as Budapest in one day: where to go and what to see.
Fly Isabella
Blogger Liz Stark says that nineteenth century English explorer Isabella Lucy Bird is the inspiration for her website Fly Isabella. Liz says that she thrives on seeking out the ‘best bits’ of a place, and that she wants to see everything that is worth seeing at least once in her lifetime. She writes about city culture in posts such as A brilliant Spanish City: weekend in Valencia.

Kirstie Pelling is commissioning editor of Trips100. When she isn't writing here, she is one fifth of The Family Adventure Project, a website all about families getting active and having fun together. Along with husband and co-founder Stuart Wickes and their three children, the family have cycled more than 12,000 miles, across more than 20 countries.

  1. Thanks for the mention Kirstie! and so glad Valencia gets a feature – it’s such an incredible city, and most excitingly because this was a total surprise. I knew very little about it but had the best time and always recommend it to friends now.

    • Hi Liz. Thanks for your comment. Yes it’s always the cities you’ve never heard of that deliver the best surprises isn’t it? I read a late deal from a budget airline recently where I had to look up all the cities to find out what country they were in. Lot of Sweden and Norway covered in snow…

    • Hi Ria. Any Spanish town, city, mountain or rural landscape gets my vote! We are lucky to have access to Europe and cheap flights don’t you think?

  2. Thanks Kirstie for the mention. London with its history and cultural diversity there is always something to discover even for a cabbie. Writing twice weekly I’m never short of inspiration.
