At Trips100, our community is all about sharing a passion for travel, and today we’re highlighting some of our favourite accessible travel and disability blogs.
Although traveling with a disability or chronic health condition can present challenges, we hope these blogs will give you invaluable information and confidence to continue travelling if you or a companion has additional needs.
We’re sharing this post as part of Trips100’s Diversity Month, during which Trips100 and our sister sites are sharing content from a diverse cross-section of bloggers and influencers. Find out more about the campaign by reading this post.
The Bimblers
The Bimblers are the go-to blog if you’re looking for information about UK accessible travel. Their site says it’s about life in the slow lane – with features on walking holidays and days out, accessible travel, mobility and health.
The blog was created by Rob and his partner Bridget, who struggles with Rheumatoid Arthritis. In 2014 their lives changed when Bridget’s condition became more serious, and she began to struggle with everyday tasks. Rob left his job to become Bridget’s carer, and they developed a plan to travel more. “Looking back, it was a crazy plan because travelling with mobility problems isn’t easy,” says Rob.
Simply Emma
One of the UK’s leading disability travel bloggers, Emma lives in Scotland with her partner and cat. Her blog focuses on accessible travel and life experiences from the perspective of a wheelchair user. Simply Emma was created to encourage others, with or without a disability, to travel more and make new discoveries, whether that’s abroad or in your own hometown.
Emma herself has a muscle wasting condition called Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy. She says, “This means me wheels are my legs, but that certainly hasn’t stopped my from travelling and living my life the way I want to.”
Back Pain Blog UK
Barbara from Back Pain Blog UK writes widely about her personal struggle with chronic back pain after five spinal surgeries. Diagnosed with fibromylgia, Barbara shares regular advice for others with chronic pain conditions – including inspiring posts about her travel adventures. Barbara urges fellow travellers with chronic pain to travel as much as their condition allows. “Being vigilant and aware of your situation will make it easier to travel,” she says.
Check out Barbara’s blog for advice on flying and road trips with chronic back pain.
Jay on Life
Jay was born in Nigeria, one of three countries in the world where polio is still endemic. Unfortunately, she contracted polio as a baby, and this caused a range of issues including scoliosis.
Living in London presents significant challenges but Jay on Life is an invaluable resource. The blog doesn’t just capture the sights and sounds of the destinations Jay visits, but it also packed with tips and advice on the accessibility provision and challenges of different destinations.
The Pickle Sandwich
Scottish blogger Dilara is one half of the hilarious Pickle Sandwich YouTube channel. Dilara, who is profoundly deaf, runs the channel with Justine, an Aussie blogger who is legally blind. They vlog about travel, but also more broadly on life, relationships and disability. Here’s a recent video showing their travels to Spain:
Martyn Sibley
Martyn is a UK-based author who has Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). This disability means he is unable to walk, lift anything heavier than a book or complete many everyday tasks. But as you might expect from a guy who wrote a book called, “Anything is Possible”, Martyn is still committed to seeing the world.
Martyn’s blog regularly covers travel posts, from road trips throughout the UK to Australian adventures and European breaks.
Tony Giles
Blogger Tony Giles is totally blind and 80% deaf in both ears. Despite these challenges, Tony has visited the World’s Seven continents, all fifty states of the USA, crossed the Arctic Circle, travelled in every South American country and visited all ten Canadian provinces. Originally from Weston-super-Mare, Tony was most recently spotted in Lausanne, Switzerland, preparing to give a talk at the closing ceremony of a student-led event about tourism and travel.
These blogs represent just a small number of the amazing disability travel bloggers in the UK writing about travel from the perspective of someone with a disability or chronic condition. If we’ve missed one of your favourite blogs, please do drop us a link in the comments!
